Wooden Pallets & Custom Manufacturing

What is the difference between new and recycled pallets?

New wooden pallets are manufactured using new lumber and can be built to specific dimensions and load requirements. Recycled pallets have been recovered, inspected and, when necessary, repaired for continued use.

New pallets are often the best choice if you have custom specifications, while recycled pallets are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for many commercial shipping and warehousing applications.

Can wooden pallets be manufactured in custom sizes?

Yes. St. Boniface Pallet manufactures custom wooden pallets designed around specific product dimensions, load requirements, and handling conditions.

We use the Pallet Design System (PDS) to evaluate pallet construction and predicted load performance, helping businesses select pallet designs suited to their applications.

What’s the difference between a pallet and a skid?

Pallets and skids are similar, but a pallet has both top and bottom deck boards, while a skid only has deck boards on top. This means that skids are typically lighter and take up less space, but they can be less stable, and often have a lower weight capacity.

Your load weight, dimensions, and handling requirements determine whether a pallet or a skid is better for your shipment.

Recycled Pallets

What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B recycled pallets?

Grade A recycled pallets have a cleaner appearance and fewer repairs, while Grade B pallets often have structural repairs and show more wear and tear.

Grade A pallets are often preferred when appearance and consistency matter, while Grade B pallets are a more economical option, especially when they are not expected to be returned.

View our Recycled Pallet Grades for more detailed specifications.

Are recycled wooden pallets suitable for commercial shipping?

Yes. Recycled wooden pallets are a good choice for commercial shipping when their condition, construction, and load capacity meet the intended requirements.

St. Boniface Pallet inspects, sorts, and refurbishes pallets as part of our pallet recycling program. We offer several grades of recycled pallet for different applications.

Product weight, handling equipment, storage conditions, and shipping destinations should all be taken into account when choosing recycled pallets.

Does St. Boniface Pallet pick up unwanted wooden pallets?

Yes. St. Boniface Pallet provides commercial pallet pickup for businesses in Winnipeg with 50 or more unwanted wooden pallets.

Businesses in rural Manitoba can contact us to discuss collection arrangements. For customers generating larger volumes, we also offer a trailer spotting program for ongoing pallet and wood waste collection.

Visit our Pallet & Wood Pickup page for details.

Do you pick up other wood waste for recycling?

Yes. Contact us to discuss your pickup and recycling options.

How does your trailer spotting program work?

For customers who generate large amounts of wood and pallet waste, we offer a trailer spotting program. We leave a trailer at your facility site for you to load with pallets and wood waste. Once the trailer is full, we switch it out for an empty one and recycle the contents. Contact us to make arrangements for trailer spotting.

What do you do with used pallets and wood waste?

As much as possible, we repurpose used pallets. We repair them, sort them by quality, and offer them to our customers through our recycled pallet service.

Wood waste and pallets that cannot be reused are repurposed, either as garden mulch or as biomass for wood-fueled boiler systems.

What happens to nails and metals in the mulched wood waste?

We separate scrap nails and metals during the wood grinding process and recycle them.

Custom Wooden Crates & Pallet Design

Can St. Boniface Pallet manufacture custom wooden shipping crates?

Yes. St. Boniface Pallet designs and manufactures custom wooden shipping crates and boxes for products that need specialized support or protection.

Crates can be built around product dimensions, weight distribution, handling requirements, and shipping conditions. Protective materials may also be incorporated where needed.

Explore our Custom Wooden Boxes & Crates page for more information.

When should a business use a wooden shipping crate instead of a pallet?

Wooden shipping crates provide more protection than pallets, since they enclose the product on all sides. Depending on how much ventilation and protection is needed, crates can have open or closed sides. A crate also allows irregularly shaped items to be easily stacked or packed together.

Pallets are lighter and can be more cost effective. They provide a sturdy base to support a product during shipping, as well as making it easier to move.

The best choice of packaging depends on the product’s weight, dimensions, sensitivity, and transportation conditions.

How does pallet design affect load capacity and shipping performance?

Pallet design affects how weight is distributed and supported during storage, handling and transportation.

The variety of wood used, the construction methods, the component dimensions, and the placement of the load on the pallet all influence performance.

St. Boniface Pallet uses the Pallet Design System (PDS) to evaluate predicted load performance and develop custom pallet designs suited to specific applications.

Heat Treatment & International Shipping

What are ISPM 15 heat-treated wooden pallets?

ISPM 15 is an international standard for treating and marking certain solid wood packaging materials used in international trade.

Under the conventional HT treatment schedule, wood must reach a minimum core temperature of 56°C for at least 30 continuous minutes. Compliant packaging carries an approved IPPC mark.

St. Boniface Pallet supplies ISPM 15 heat-treated wooden pallets for qualifying export shipments.

What does an IPPC stamp on a pallet mean?

An IPPC stamp certifies that a pallet complies with phytosanitary regulations. Wood packaging materials, such as pallets and crates, need to meet ISPM 15 standards to be shipped internationally, since untreated wood can carry pests and diseases.

An IPPC stamp typically has the IPPC symbol, a country code, an identifier for the treatment provider or producer, and a treatment code. The treatment code HT indicates that a pallet has been heat treated.

Heat treated pallets can be shipped internationally to most countries.

Do wooden pallets need to be heat-treated when shipping from Canada to the United States?

Not always. Under the Canada–U.S. bilateral exemption, qualifying wood packaging made from Canadian- or U.S.-origin wood generally does not require ISPM 15 treatment or marking when shipped between the two countries.

Origin documentation and inspection requirements still apply. Packaging made from wood originating outside of Canada and the U.S., or shipped to certain U.S. destinations, may have different treatment requirements.

Be sure to confirm current import regulations before shipping.
